Teaching Observation

Boy! Actual teaching is different than just reading about how to teach.
I was able to visit Mr. Hunter's class at Oak Canyon Junior High school in Lindon. It surely was an interesting adventure. I was very impressed by what they teach in their junior High School. When we visited his class, he was teaching the students how to use imovie, after just getting done with iphoto. I am not familiar with either one of those programs since they are for Macintosh. It was amazing to see the projects that these young kids were able to produce.

The second class that came in while we were there was a woodshop class. The students at the time were drafting which was fun for me. I could actually help them out with some of their questions, since that is my expertise. Yeah!!! To tell you the truth, I don't think I agree entirely with how the teacher handled the second class. It was a lot of one on one help and the students doing their own thing. For this reason the teacher was not able to apply the discipline that was needed. So many kids talking, not working, goofing off, and truely made it hard for those students who actually were doing what they were supposed to. They simply got away with things because the class was too big, all worked at different paces, and the teacher was concentrating on helping students with questions and needs.

I did learn some tricks that I would like to apply when I teach and that students respond a lot better to count downs with a punishment at the end, than just saying do it now or else. I hope I can be a fun teacher and do fun and interesting projects, when I become a teacher. I enjoyed this experience a lot as I got to talk to students about what they like about the class and such. What a learning experience!

Sounds like you had a good experience - it's nice that they were doing drafting. What else didn't you like about the experience?
